Calorie Counting - how to do it (and what you can do instead)
Calorie counting can be a real chore. When it comes to counting calories, you need to look at a lot of different things and this can be confusing. You’re not just counting the calories of the food you eat, but you’re counting the calories that you burn every day. So here's your guide to calorie counting and some tips to help you reach your goals.
How do you count the calories in the food that you eat?
First you need to learn how to read labels. On most packaged food there is going to be a nutrition label which will give you the number of calories per serving, what that serving size is and it will give you a break down of how many grams of fat, carbohydrates and protein there are in each serving. These elements; fats, carbohydrates and proteins (and alcohol) are what make up the calories in your diet.
Learning how to read a label is just the beginning.
Then you need to understand what a portion size is. That’s where some packaged foods can trick you. You can sit down with a small bag of chips and think your only eating 100 calories, because that’s what the label says; “100 calories per serving”. But you don’t notice that there are 2 servings per package. So you really just ate 200 calories worth of chips. Don’t just read the calories, but the serving size and the number of servings per package.
You need to understand what types of calories you are taking in.
Not all calories are created equal. Some foods are going to be better for you when it comes to losing weight. For an awesome guide on which foods to eat, check out the healthy dieting video below.
You can also try to keep track of how many calories you’re burning every day.
But this can be extremely tedious work. There are books, websites and even iPhone apps that tell you how many calories you burn for each little activity that you do. Some examples would be how many calories you burn per hour while brushing your teeth, walking your dog or taking out the trash. And of course they tell you calories burned for exercises like jogging. But your body also burns a lot of calories through it’s normal functioning. For example, if you were to lie in bed all day (I don’t recommend it) you will still burn a lot of calories. This doesn’t mean that activity is not important. It is extremely important. The more active your lifestyle is, the higher your metabolism will be. The higher your metabolism is, the more calories you will burn throughout your normal daily activities.
But like I said, keeping track of how many calories you’re burning for every little activity is extremely tedious. What I would recommend instead is adopting a healthy and active lifestyle, paying attention to the foods that you eat and the activities that you do. If you’re trying to lose weight, pay attention to your weight everyday and if you’re not losing the weight you want then try to become more active. And eat better.
